With every day, our goal of getting to New Orleans seems much more realistic. We're almost there...
- Started in Caruthersville MO, Ended in Vicksburg, MS
- Miles: 338
- Average: 48 miles/day
- Points of Interest: Memphis (TN), Helena (AR), the confluence of the Mississippi and the Arkansas, channels near the White River
A week of Blues (the good kind)
We got into Vicksburg on the last day of the week. Needing groceries, we called Lane, another River Angel. We met him at the Vicksburg landing and he brought us to the grocery store. After filling up with groceries for the last leg of the trip, we stopped at McDonalds to splurge on some dollar burgers. We said our goodbyes to Lane and then paddled under the moonlight, setting up camp under the Vicksburg Bridge.
Notes from Week 8
The River Angels made our trip more enjoyable because they can relate to most of our experiences. Actually speaking with other paddlers is entertaining, as well as beneficial. Check out resources like Quapaw Canoe Company, Big Muddy Adventures, or the Lower Mississippi River Paddlers group.
Camp at the confluence of the Arkansas and the Mississippi
The sunset over the Arkansas River was one of the most beautiful moments of our entire trip.
Be careful just North of Greenville.
We found that the substructure North of Greenville was dangerous. The River was full of swells and we constantly found ourselves on the lookout for active water.
Stop in Memphis. Eat barbecue.
Go to Beale Street for a night. The music itself will cheer you up. The dry rub at Rendezvous is excellent and Central Barbecue has meat that nearly falls of the bone.
